The somewhat bleak black and white cover of this book caught my eye when it was released so I was delighted to be asked to review it. I remain firmly convinced that the ending could have been happier without taking away from what had already happened. Marvellous, and highly recommended The happy-ever-after didn’t come easy, but Michael and John kept at it until it worked.
It’s heartbreaking and heartwarming and I just can’t find words good enough to describe this book. Not that I mind leering hunks, mind you, it’s just that I’m awfully tired of them. The slow pacing of the story, the frank animosity between the two main characters and their tentative growing closer is incredibly well done.

But the book ends in and I can’t help wondering how Michael and John are going to cope with WW2! I would highly recommend this book to all mm fans out there: Instead it showed two rather gruff men struggling to cope on their own, and discovering that the way to recovery was in each other.
The way that the author deals with both Michael and Jon’s PTSD was subtle and excellent; the way that they came to love each other was slow and never felt forced. Might have to revisit it at a later date.

This is a book that sings – a romance that grabs first at the mind, then at the heart. I’ve read quite a number of book set in and around war-time, and quite a few contemporaries which show the aftermath of modern warfare, but I think this is one of the few romances I’ve read which looks at the aftermath of the First World War.
